THE GREAT BOOKS Keys to the Classics: A Biblical Analysis of the Great Books of Western Civilization by Dennis Oliver Woods. It is impossible to understand your daily newspaper without a knowledge of the classics. This book equips you with a biblical worldview encompassing all academic disciplines. Includes analysis of 50 classical authors from Homer to Van Til, covering the first three Great Books Courses. Each essay covers biography, historical background, summary of teaching, historical implications, biblical analysis, and application. Thirty-question quiz for each essay to test your understanding, plus reading assignments in the classics and discussion questions. Keys to the Classics Teacher's Guide by Dennis Oliver Woods. Includes Learning objectives and lesson plans. Explains how to use the course at home or in the classroom. Short answers to quiz questions and nearly 500 open-end questions posed in Keys to the Classics makes this Guide an easily understood, philosophical treatise in its own right -- Some are even calling this Philosophy for Dummies. Note: "The Great Conversation" has been revised to the 9th grade reading level and renamed "Keys to the Classics". A brief summary (typically 70-75 words) has been added to each essay on the 50 classical authors together with an icon set in a key. The icon gives the student a visual connection to the theme of the classic or classical author. For example, Isaac Newton gets an apple, Socrates a big question mark, Jesus a lamb, etc. Icons and summaries are suitable for copying and creation of flash cards. Your student may forget everything he reads about the classics, but these visual reminders will cling to his memory for years, reminding him of the core philosophy and guarding his Biblical worldview. If the classical writings have been a "closed book" for you or your child, "Keys to the Classics" will unlock them forever. The title may have changed, but the subtitle and content remains: "A Biblical Analysis of the Great Books of Western Civilization". AMERICAN HISTORY Discipling the Nations by Dennis Oliver Woods. There was no Christian consensus on the U.S. Constitution at the time of ratification; it was enacted by the narrowest of margins in the midst of heated debate. This perfect bound book opens with anti-federalist and biblical analysis of the U.S. Constitution, paving the way for description of foundation, function, and form of biblical civil government. Provides alternative approach to that of many other contemporary, Christian authors, who typically adopt the Federalist view of the U.S. Constitution. Covenant & Conflict in American History by Dennis Oliver Woods. It is impossible to understand American history apart from the covenant theory of civil government. Spiral bound companion to Discipling the Nations. Breaks American history into six eras: Puritan, Neo-classical, Romantic, Militant Unitarianism, Realism, and Modernity. Each section contains overview, timeline and representative poetry and prose that illustrates the heartbeat of the historical forces at work. American government is evaluated from a covenantal rather than social contract perspective. Required for American Government & History I course. These books are required for the course. LATIN Latin Grammar Vol I by Ann Myers. Why is it that people who study Latin often score higher on the language based parts of standardized tests? Latin is in a sense the "mother" of our mother tongue, English; and the study of Latin affords an excellent introduction to language studies in general. A basic knowledge of Latin equips the student in a broad way, teaching him the roots of a host of English words; providing a sound understanding of the workings of grammar; and bolstering vocabulary and spelling skills like few other studies can. Perhaps more important still, Latin has been the language of the Church for centuries, and of the Roman empire before it. Because of this, the study of Latin richly benefits the student who hopes to pursue theological or classical studies; and it offers to all students a deeper understanding of Western Heritage. Anne Myers' text is a fun, accessible introduction to Latin. An extensive vocabulary is integrated into ten weeks of lessons. Students will enjoy a variety of exercises including stories and dialogue. "The English Connection" section gives the student work in identifying Latin roots of English words; and the text includes English-Latin and Latin-English glossaries.
