Association of Classical & Christian Schools Confession of Faith

The following confession of faith is in three parts. The first (A) is a form of the Apostles' Creed. The second (B) is a general evangelical confession of faith. The third (C & D) is an abridged version of the first two chapters of the Westminster Confession of Faith. It is mandatory that all ACCS board members, and all member schools and household members, subscribe to the confession of faith below in a manner and method prescribed by the board of directors, either by written statement or by oral testimony before the board.

A. We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord. Jesus Christ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and was born of a virgin, Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hades, and on the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, where He sits at the right hand of God the father Almighty. From Heaven He shall come to earth again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, one holy Christian church, the communion of all true saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the gift of everlasting life.

B. We believe the Bible to be the only inerrant Word of God. It is our only authoritative rule for faith and practice.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. In all things He is limited by nothing other than His own nature and character. We believe the God we serve is holy, righteous, good, loving, and full of mercy. He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Governor of everything that has been made.

We believe in the true deity and full humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father and in His personal return in power and glory.

We believe in the full deity of the Holy Spirit, acknowledging His work in creation and redemption, together with the Father and the Son.

We believe that because of Adam's sin all mankind is in rebellion against God. For the salvation of such lost and sinful men, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary.

We believe that salvation is by grace through faith alone, and that faith without works is dead.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those who are saved to the resurrection of life, and those who are lost to the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

C. Of the Holy Scripture...The light of nature, and the works of creation and providence, clearly manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, so as to leave men inexcusable. Yet such manifestations are not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of His will, which is necessary for salvation. Therefore it pleased the Lord, at assorted times, and in various ways, to reveal Himself, and to declare His will to His Church. And afterwards, for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more certain establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, it pleased Him to commit this revealed will to writing. This makes the Holy Scripture to be most necessary, because the former ways of God's revealing His will to His people are now ceased.

Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God in written form, are all the books of the Old and New Testaments, which are Genesis through Malachi, and Matthew through Revelation respectively. All these books are given by inspiration of God, to be the rule of faith and life.

The books commonly called the Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of Scripture. Therefore they are of no authority in the Church of God, nor are they to be more approved, or made use of, than other human writings.

The authority of the Holy Scripture, on account of which it ought to be believed and obeyed, does not depend on the testimony of any man or church, but entirely upon God, who is Truth itself, and the author of truth. It is therefore to be received, because it is the Word of God.

We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to an high and reverential esteem of the Holy Scripture. We may also be moved by the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all its parts, the scope of the whole (which is to give all glory to God), the full revelation it makes of the only way of man's salvation, its many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection of it. All these are arguments whereby it abundantly evidences itself to be the Word of God. Yet, notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth, and divine authority of the Word, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit, bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts.

The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man's salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or it may by good and necessary consequence be deduced from Scripture. Nothing at any time is to be added to this, whether by "new revelations" of the Spirit, or by traditions of men. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word. We also acknowledge that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and the government of the Church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed.

All things in Scripture are not equally plain in themselves, nor equally clear to all. Yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed, and observed, for salvation, are so clearly propounded and set forth in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but also the unlearned, in a normal use of ordinary means, may come to a sufficient understanding of them.

The Old Testament in Hebrew and Aramaic (which were the native languages of the people of God of old,) and the New Testament in Greek, (which at the time of writing was most generally known to the nations,) were immediately inspired by God, and by His singular care and providence were kept pure in all ages, and are therefore authentic. Therefore, in all controversies of religion, the Church is finally to appeal to them alone. But these original tongues are not known to all the people of God, who have right to, and interest in, the Scriptures, and are commanded, in the fear of God, to read and search them. Therefore they are to be translated into the common language of every nation to which they come. Thus the Word of God will dwell plentifully with all, and they will worship Him in an acceptable manner, and, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, they will have hope.

The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself. Therefore, when there is a question about the true and full sense of any passage of Scripture, it must be searched and known by other places that speak more clearly.

The supreme Judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and under whose sentence we are to rest, can be none other than the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture.

D. Of God, and of the Holy Trinity...There is only one living and true God, infinite in being and perfection, a most pure Spirit, and invisible. He is without body, parts, or passions, immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, and most absolute. He works all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous will, for His own glory. He is most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. He is the rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. In all, He is most just and terrible in His judgments, hating all sin, and He will by no means clear the guilty.

God has all life, glory, goodness, blessedness, in and of Himself. He alone is in and unto Himself all-sufficient, not standing in need of any creatures which He has made. He does not derive any glory from them, but only manifests His own glory, in, by, unto, and upon them. He is the only fountain of all being, of whom, through whom, and to whom, are all things. He has most sovereign dominion over them, to do by them, for them, or upon them, whatever He pleases. In His sight all things are open and manifest; His knowledge is infinite, infallible, and independent of the creature. Nothing is to Him contingent or uncertain. He is most holy in all His counsels, in all His works, and in all His commands. To Him is due from angels and men, and every other creature, whatever worship, service, or obedience He is pleased to require of them.

In the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The Father is from none, neither begotten nor proceeding. The Son is eternally begotten by the Father; as the Word of God, He is eternally spoken by the Father. The Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son.

FAQ

Are you accredited?Absolutely not. Accreditation tends to destroy Christian Education over time by forcing conformity to a secular world view. Accreditation isn't necessary at the High School level anyway. Most colleges now look very favorably on home schooled and distance education students. ClassicalFree Academy students develop a portfolio of academic accomplishment that in most cases will speak for itself.

We are however, an affiliate member of the Association of Classical & Christian Schools (ACCS). As such, we subscribe to the ACCS Confession of Faith, and are in agreement with the vision for education set forth in the ACCS Mission Statement.

How do you evaluate student performance? Do you offer a diploma? Each class has its own evaluation built in with tests, quizzes, student projects, etc. These become part of the student's permanent portfolio and a diploma is issued by ClassicalFree Virtual Academy upon completion of the 12-trimester program. Students shooting for admission to top-tier universities, who may desire a more rigorous independent evaluation, are referred to Basic Skills Assessment & Educational Services (BSAES) for testing and transcripting services. BSAES is a ClassicalFree partner institution that has built a national reputation for the quality of their independent audits. An BSAES audit is accepted by the admission departments of many American colleges and universities.

Are you K-12? At present, ClassicalFree Academy serves grades 7-12. We are focusing on those years in a child's life when the home school parent typically runs into roadblocks and begins to cast about for help. As soon as our secondary school is complete, we will move aggressively to develop our primary offering.

Are scholarships available? The 22 free courses offered are the scholarships we give to every student. This represents an approxiate 40% discount from the total cost of your child's education. Actually when you compare the cost of tuition at ClassicalFree with other popular internet offerings, the average savings exceeds 51%. Moreover, most of our free courses are on-line with no text book purchase required.

Do you offer discounts for multiple children in a family? No, for the same reason

Are your teachers qualified? Our teachers are gifted in their areas of expertise, well-trained and highly motivated by the Great Commission and the free-enterprise motive to provide you with the highest quality Classical Christian education. In addition to primary spiritual qualifications, six ClassicalFree staff members hold doctorates (1 candidate) and four have earned a masters degree.

Does class work run concurrently with the traditional school year? Yes and no. Grammar level (introductory) courses are completely self-contained online and self-administered, so that each student may complete them at his own pace. On the other hand, upper division, fee-based courses follow the schedule of a 15-week trimester school year with three weeks off at Christmas and a two weeks off between the other two trimesters. All courses are offered every trimester.

Why isn't this offered on a CD-ROM? First, we want to be in a position to give you updates and changes instantaneously and free of charge without having to release a new edition of a CD. Second, it does not require any installation effort on your part--all interaction with ClassicalFree is done through your internet browser. Third, it has the side effect of freeing up valuable space on your hard drive. And finally, we also want you to have direct access to the internet for research missions.

Are there any special system requirements? ClassicalFree Virtual Academy is available to everyone with a computer and an internet connection -- either through an AOL or Compuserve type account, or through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This means that if his computer is capable of "surfing the web", the student can subscribe to any of the free classes offered. There are no "minimum" requirements for hardware. Of course, the more advanced the computer and the faster the modem connection speed, the better the result will be. The courses have been optimized to work with Internet Explorer version 5.0 and Netscape version 6.0 or better. Earlier versions of these and other browsers should still work, though results may vary.

Advanced (i.e. fee-based, instructor-led or monitored) courses require interaction between instructor and students. The instructor has latitude in determining the level of interaction, depending on the nature of the course. Some courses may require email correspondence on a regular basis, others may require instant messaging; still others may require some form of video or voice interaction. For these types of courses, the instructor may require that the student have access to speakers, a microphone, and/or a videocam, all of which are readily available in the marketplace today at reasonable prices.

What is the parents' role? We encourage parents to fill the role of tutor wherever possible and have structured the fee schedule to make this very financially palatable. However, when parents do not have the time or specialized training to tutor a course, they may delegate this responsibility to one of our professional tutors.

Does my child have to start at the 7th grade level? No, if you can provide adequate proof of completion in the form of a portfolio, validated test scores, certificates of completion, etc. These should be mailed to:
PO Box 497
Clackamas OR 97015.
However you may have to make up certain classes considered unique to a classical education. For example, a student entering at the 9th grade level will have to make up Great Books Intro I/II and Colloquium I, and most likely courses in Logic and Latin.

Can I find out what's in a class without having to register for it? Yes, there's a couple of ways to do this. (1) You can take a "sample" course from the Great Books to find out how the courses are laid out in general. You'll find this option on the Campus Map under "Philosophy". You don't need a user id or password to do this. You just click and go. (2) You can also read about the classes under "Academics - Course Descriptions". (3) You can always register for a free class, with no obligation, take the quizzes, and preview it in depth to evaluate whether or not it suits your children's needs. (4) Finally, if you have specific questions concerning course content, you can email the instructor who developed or is currently assigned to the course and they will be glad to provide you an answer.

Does ClassicalFree have a dual-credit option program for upper-classmen? Yes, we have a unique dual credit arrangement with Bartlett University that helps juniors and seniors get an early start on their college education. Economics II, Pre-Calculus, Bible Survey II & III, Music History, Logic II, Rhetoric II, Shakespeare II, and Bible Doctrine II & III are dual-credit coures that dovetail with Bartlett curricula. The Bartlett University credits are granted following student acceptance into Bartlett and receipt of an official Classical Free transcript.

Bartlett University is designed to implement Biblical perspectives in higher education content and pedagogy. By extending family involvement in home education through the college years and helping students launch culture transforming Christian businesses, Bartlett is "Defining the university and business for future generations." "I spent 25 years as a political pollster and activist helping maintain a Republican majority in the Oregon legislature. As time passed, it became painfully obvious that our Christian legislators -- with a few notable exceptions -- had a very weak biblical world view. I founded ClassicalFree Virtual Academy to help remedy this situation."

What others are saying

Your material on the ClassicalFree website has been an enormous blessing! I have especially appreciated your ability to distill an author's writing into a few clear ideas and show their biblical implications for today. This is exactly what I have been looking for and dicn't know it existed.
Cynthia Glenn Dilts, Homeschool Mom

"What an exciting project! We are grateful for all your work and input. This looks so good! This is what we have been praying for for these grades. I would like to know how I can help you develop this project."
Christine Field, Homeschool mom, Author of homeschooling books, and former attorney.

“I signed up to take the Practical Logic course with my oldest daughter..The class looks wonderful…I’ve listed ClassicalFree Virtual Academy on the resource list I’ll be handing out next weekend at my workshops at our state homeschool convention. Thank you for offering this valuable service to homeschoolers.”
Lynne Spear, Homeschool Activist.

Woods has done us all a great service by writing this balanced, comprehensive, easy-to-understand and intensely practical handbook to the subject of civil government from a Christian perspective. Marked by biblical fidelity, political sagacity and cultural immediacy. [referring to our online American Government/History text: "Discipling the Nations"].
George Grant, Christian Author, Kings Meadow Study Center.

Woods does a fine job of introducing the modern Christian reader to some of the complex issues which lead to our current political and cultural impasse. Contrary to the received opinion, our problem did not begin in the sixties, unless you mean the 1760s. Woods has written a very fine introduction to biblical thinking on constitutional issues. [Referring to our online American Government/History text: "Discipling the Nations"] Judging from Woods' past work, I look forward to watching the growth of ClassicalFree Academy.
Douglas Wilson, Author of "Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning" and Founder of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools (ACCS).

Every Christian parent should examine this new offering. The opportunities for a solid grounding in the Christian Worldview are unlimited. Theologically, ClassicalFree Academy is solidly and uncompromisingly grounded in the historic Reformation, with no trace of the deadly Enlightenment and egalitarian influences which affect so many otherwise excellent offerings.
Raymond Joseph, Pastor (RPC)

Nothing-- may I say that again?-- nothing is more important in the battle for our covenant future than faithful covenant education. And no recent tool has held more potential than the Internet to help an increasingly scattered people of God fulfill their education mandate. The potential of Classical Free Virtual Academy is enormous. Get on board. Hold the feet of the providers to the fire, pressuring them to stay on track, to keep offering the best, and to charge (whatever) as needed. The important thing is that we fulfill the mandate to educate our children in Christ. What a powerful means this could be with your involvement.
Steve Schlissel (Pastor/overseer of Urban Nations)

Every once in a while, someone provides a service to the Christian community which, if utilized, promises to be one of those few invaluable experiences that help determine the character of our lives. The ClassicalFree Virtual Academy is such a service for parents who understand the incredible significance of a child's education. The goal of the Academy is an ambitious one, indeed, and its success depends primarily upon discerning parents who recognize a golden opportunity. The ClassicalFree Virtual Academy is an excellent combination of technology and a proven educational philosophy.
Jim Bordwine, Th.D., Pastor (PCA)

Thank God ClassicalFree Virtual Academy has given the church a solid Christian alternative to the secular public education curriculum. Students completing this curriculum will run circles around their secular peers as well as outperform many public education teachers. This curriculum does a great job of exceeding state teaching standards while being built on a solid biblical foundation.
Hector Falcon, Christian High School Teacher

Here's what impressed me about your academy. The reformed perspective and the all-encompassing Christian worldview. I was thrilled by how clearly literature, history, etc., was analyzed and evaluated in terms of a Biblical perspective and a Christian worldview. You don't leave it for the students to figure it out on their own - you explain it. They need this kind of teaching! This is the kind of "educating" I've been longing to find. We do our best on the home front and our church also works to equip our family (and does a very good job), but we need this support in our upper-level academics.
Eleanor Braun, Home School Mother

"I have been using Classical Free for about a year now and am very happy with it. I have used many different curriculums but, by far, classical free is my favorite. Classical Free is easy to use and extremely well designed. There are a lot of course options and it allows me to work at my own pace. The staff is also very helpful. Overall, Classical Free Virtual Academy is an excellent service and I would recommend it to any homeschooler."
Tyler Marcoz, age 14, 8th grade, Evans, GA

"First of all, we are enjoying the Classical approach very much--this is the first year I have attempted it, and I feel that I have found another new reason for home schooling!... Again, thank you for allowing God to do his work in your life so that you affect others for His glory. We have been blessed by ClassicalFree Virtual Academy!"
Sheri Stanley , Home School Mother

"Melissa has finished high school and is doing college-level work at home. These courses sounded so good, we didn't want to pass them up."
Mrs Keen, Home school mom

"The ultimate Internet experience, dude."
Steve Lollar, ClassicalFree Student

"Very balanced and very well laid out. We are thrilled to death and want to do a study group with your material."
Catherine Linamen, Home School Mom

"Everybody I've talked to is thrilled with this. The classes you are offering are just incredible."

"We are currently using the Robinson material. [ClassicalFree's Great Books program] goes well with it and is more in-depth. Your program will bring some consistency to what he's reading in Robinson."
Patricia Salas, Home School Mom

Suzanne and Clayton Crymes,Family Learning Services

“I think this is a wonderful idea!! My husband and I are very impressed with your efforts so far. Thank you."
Cindy Rollins, Homeschool mother.

“I decided to take my two sons out of public school today. It was a hard decision to make because I have 4 children and my husband is disabled and I am a college student myself. I ran across your site and I’m very excited. I had tried to get my children into a Christian academy but I just don’t have the money. "
Wendy Wright, College student and Mother.

“I was very impressed and appreciate the curriculum you have assembled particularly in the Great Books Hall. Thank you very much for organizing this school."
John Pershe, Homeschool father.

“We just want to thank you for the work you are doing with "Classical Free Academy. We recently have found our 'niche' with classical educational materials and were looking for some help with the older children, and God in His graciousness allowed us to find you Academy."
Marc & Kelly Smith, Homeschool family.

“Thank you very much for this great ministry. I am now on my 9th week of study of Latin I and am absolutely loving it."
Cynthia Nielsen, Missionary in Moscow, Russia.

“I look forward to interacting with you regarding your unique and exciting offer of a classical education in which the Word of God is thoroughly integrated. This is the first of its kind that I’ve ever seen."
Sherie Henderson, CBInternational missionary to Russia.

“I truly appreciate all that you are doing with your on-line program. Your program is a tremendous support for all of us out here trying to “Repair the Ruins”.
Dorothy Plaza, Science instructor.

"You guys make history informative AND fun!!!"
Danny Healey, Sales and part-time student.

"I wish this had been available to homeschoolers years ago! I want to express my gratitude and appreciation for what y'll have opened to all homeschoolers."
Cinda Pratt, Homeschool mother.

"My husband and I are missionaries serving in Moscow, Russia. I came across your website and am incredibly excited about such an opportunity. Thank you for such a great ministry."
Cynthia Nielsen, missionary

"Let me tell you how delighted I was to come across your website. About 4 years ago I bought a complete set of Harvard Classics for $1 at a library booksale. I have been trying for years to figure out a way to incorporate them into my homeschooling efforts without success. I knew I would need to interpret all that literature from a biblical worldview and have never felt secure that I could do so. What a joy to discover your courses."
Kathleen A. Dillie, Homeschool Mother

"A wealth of information in the free trial courses. I'm glad someone is dealing with this perspective on the Constituton."
Home School Mother

"Thank you for the truth and honesty you have shared with me. I am ready for the walls to come tumbling down. Please continue to challenge my brain and direct me to the text you are describing about the Constitution."
Dr. Julie K. Bjornson

"Keep up the wonderful work! May the Lord continue to bless you in all your endeavors."
David Schildkraut

"My husband and I homeschool our children and a very Godly older gentleman who lives with us is teaching our two oldest girls history using your book, "Discipling the Nations". He loves it. He has invested a lot of time preparing for each class. He has them read other sources like "The Law" by Frederik Bastiat and made them write summaries of each chapter. My husband oversees them and all of them are excited and impressed with what they are being presented. Thank you for your work in this area. I pray many parents will have their eyes opened and run from the government schools. What a joy it is to teach my children the truth."
Betsy Boyce, Home School Mother

My son, Turrand Evans-Roskos, is currently taking Great Books Coll. from Scott Welch. Scott is a wonderful teacher and is very prepared for each class. He treats the students with tremendous respect and everyone seems to be enjoying the class.

We really appreciate all you do. Classical Christian has been an answer to prayer for us and I plan on having the rest of my 3 children follow Turrand in your school.
Tracey Evans, Home School Mother
